Who do I complain to about electrical work I have come across?

There are a number of organisations or authorities in New Zealand who deal with complaints regarding electrical work done. We refer to an electrically qualified person as an EQP.

Options for complaints are listed below:

  1. In New Zealand you can file a complaint to the Secretary of the electrical industry whereupon they will decide if your complaint has merit to proceed further. If the complaint is processed further, an investigation will take place and once this has been completed then a hearing will be held between the EQP who did the work and the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
The outcome of the above process can take up to one year, the EQP involved may be fined or censored, but, this will not get the faulty work done fixed / repaired that you have complained about.
  2. Make a complaint to an electrical organisation that the EQP who did the work belongs to. The outcome of this may be pressure put on the EQP to rectify the items from the complaint. Electrical organisations have no authority over their members and have no power to enforce any actions and they would also not suspend or remove a member on the basis of a complaint.
  3. File a complaint with the company the EQP works for or the company the EQP contracts to. This may bring pressure on the EQP to rectify the work as the company / contractor they work for will probably not want negative issues to be unresolved for them. This a viable option and a step that should be taken initially before all others as it is directly related to the EQP worker.
  4. The New Zealand court system is another avenue depending on the cost of fixing the work from the complaint. Small claims court is a good option if the cost of fixing the work does not exceed $15,000 and you would need to pay a filing fee. We would recommend you pay to have an audit done of the work (by a professional) so you can prove your case in court.

The positive outcome in this case is you can recover money to pay another EQP to rectify the work from the complaint.
